We're so excited about this game that I've taken the unusual step of adding it to the Our Games list before we even have Alpha access. A good number of our members have already pledged money to support the game and as such have guaranteed alpha access.
Star Citizen is looking like it will be the game I would have built if I had the skill, time and money. Fly the cosmos, kicking ass, trading or a variety of illegal activities. A real sandbox space SIM so you're free to do whatever your little heart desires! Shoot out the engines and defenses of another players ship, dock with them, and then board their ship and attempt to capture it!
OK a fair bit later than I was expecting but I can live with that. All being well Arena Commander is scheduled for release on Thursday 29th May. Single player vs AI mode will be available for everyone from that date. CIG will then incrementally roll out multi-player based on when people backed the game, fixing server issues, etc as they go.
For me this especially exciting and nerve wracking. I've sunk a fair bit of cash into this game, and whilst its still early days and bound to change I imagine the game play in Arena Commander will be indicative of the general direction and if my money was well spent!
CIG have also updated the organisation system so that is possible to join up to 9 orgs. You can set one org as your main organisation and then up to 8 affiliates. At this point I would ask those of you who want to play Star Citizen to join our as your primary org, and if you want to join a couple of others but don't go wild. I think there's going to be a needed political aspect where as an organisation we collectively affiliate to some of the bigger orgs. I think the political dynamic will change though once people start coming up against each other properly so this is something best left for now.
The big news is that it's still not quite ready, I'd read a lot of rumours saying this week. They are predicting a phased roll out beginning at the end of the month, and it will be based on your citizen ID number. Despite having enlisted over a year ago I'm Citizen number 135220, so I'm guessing I might get it mid to end of June. Depressing but it does give me time to get the clan site and stuff ready so maybe its for the best.
There is a competition being run by a very large (and presumably very rich) organisation, where they are giving away an Idris-M. The Idris is a frigate that requires up to 30 players to fly, its basically a clan capital ship, and it can hold a wing of hornets, so kinda like a mini aircraft carrier. When they sold them off they were going for way over $1,000 a time. Also the latest episode of 10 for the Chair is out. Chris Roberts answers 10 subscriber questions.
CIG have outdone themselves and created the next release of Star Citizen content in keeping with in game fiction. "Arena Commander" is flight simulator software available in game for training and other purposes. Due for release at the end of April / beginning of May it will have a staggered roll out with the biggest donors / longest supports getting access first. We'll be able dog fight our starships in a range of combat modes, such as team vs team, free for all, and capture the flag. Although you need to remember it's an alpha build, if they were to properly finish and polish it then it looks to me like it would easily compete with many other games already out there (e.g. War Thunder). I can't wait for the release of the persistent universe. This is going to be amazing. Check out CIGs video of their Arena Commander presentation at PAX East:
